France: Working Together for a More Sustainable World

Plastic straw ban? Discover the glass alternative!

In France alone, 8.8 million plastic straws are used and thrown away every day. They are among the 10 most collected items on French beaches. Their impact on our planet is catastrophic — a small item that is nevertheless very difficult to recycle.

What is France's approach to disposing of plastic waste?

Every year, 80,000 tons of plastic waste are released into the environment. In 2016, France recycled only 26.2 % of its plastic waste — well below the European average of 40.8 %. But how can this be explained?

Not all plastics are recyclable and are therefore not treated the same way. Most plastic waste is burned to produce energy (energy recovery). Some ends up in landfills, and only about a quarter is actually recycled and reused.

France is therefore lagging behind when it comes to recycling. That is why we must act quickly — otherwise waste will build up in our oceans.

Our actions matter

The French are not the best role models when it comes to sorting waste. Yet every action we take has consequences — so why not act to protect our planet?

Whether we give up single-use plastic, use alternatives, pay more attention to sorting and recycling, or support initiatives against plastic waste: every action counts, because it is OUR environment and WE must protect it.

By supporting Zero Waste together, we help the planet — for our generation and for future generations. Let’s stand together!

The French and plastic straws

The end of plastic straws is everyone’s business!

To stop these items from polluting our oceans, the EU has passed a ban on single-use plastic products from 2021 — including plastic straws. Giving them up is a simple but effective way to protect the environment.

Good to know

France has already started banning them. Many restaurants, cafés, and supermarkets have stopped using and selling plastic straws. But don’t worry: There are alternatives, so you can still enjoy your favorite drinks!

Plastic straws have mostly been replaced by paper-, bamboo-, silicone- or stainless steel straws. There are also edible straws (made from pasta, avocado pit, sugar, or ice) or even straw straws. However, paper is not reusable and is less eco-friendly than a metal or glass straw. So among these options, it’s important to choose the best alternative.

But which alternative should you choose?

Plastic straws are becoming less and less common in France, and various alternatives have emerged.

But how do you choose the most eco-friendly solution?

Quite simply: we have compared all the alternatives, to find the best straw for smoothies, cocktails, soft drinks, or hot drinks — with one clear result: glass is the best alternative.

Glass has many advantages: a special, durable, transparent, flavor-neutral glass with no plastic or chemicals is the most eco-friendly and suitable alternative. It may seem fragile for children — but in fact the glass straw is highly impact-resistant and no more dangerous than a regular drinking glass. Children should still always drink under supervision.

That is why we created the HALM Glass straw for you!
